William Walton was the original angry young man. He came from Oldham – and he never minced his words. So forget everything you thought you knew about British music; written in those uneasy inter-war years, Walton’s First Symphony is a controlled explosion of anger, passion, and shattering power. There’s no way to follow it, so guest conductor Yutaka Sado begins the concert with something completely different. Two fragrant French showpieces make an enchanting showcase for violinist Sayaka Shoji, and a fantastic contrast to the sheer musical wizardry of Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice - don’t miss this chance to hear this magical score in full orchestral Technicolor.
